What has opened in Karaganda
A new facility for the repair, maintenance and rebuilding of mining equipment has started work in Karaganda. It was opened by Central Asia Mining Services (CAMS). Kursiv reported the launch on 16 October, citing the Karaganda regional akimat, and on 20 October the Karaganda Online portal gave details based on statements by the company's management and the regional authorities.
According to the portal, the plant covers more than 6,000 square metres. It is equipped with modern diagnostic test benches, and its engineering team has been recruited from specialists with experience at major international mining companies. The plant will repair, service and rebuild various types of mining equipment. Both publications give the same list of brands whose equipment CAMS works with:
- Caterpillar;
- Epiroc;
- Sandvik;
- Volvo.
Kursiv puts the main argument for such a facility this way: mining companies will be able to service their equipment locally and extend the service life of expensive machinery. Besides repairs, the company supplies original spare parts from these manufacturers. The investment, production capacity and number of jobs are not disclosed in the published reports.
The niche CAMS is aiming for
CAMS chief executive Sholpan Medelbekova attributes the launch to the state of the market. In her words, Kazakhstan's market for professional servicing and rebuilding of used equipment and its components is still underdeveloped. Companies have to choose between expensive official dealer service and private workshops whose capabilities are not always up to complex technical tasks.
"The market needs a serious service company capable of closing the gap between expensive official dealer service and ad hoc private services, and of improving the operational efficiency of mining companies," Medelbekova said. The company expects that the experience of its specialists and direct contracts with global suppliers will help build a market for professional rebuilding of mining equipment in the country.
More about its specialisation can be found in the company's profile in the exhibitor catalogue of MINEX Kazakhstan 2026, held in Astana on 14–16 April. CAMS presents itself as a company that supports mining and quarry equipment in Kazakhstan throughout its service life, repairing and rebuilding it. Its named partners are the component manufacturers Dana Spicer, Kessler and AxleTech, and the brands whose machines and key components the company rebuilds include Caterpillar, Epiroc and Sandvik. Its aim, according to the profile, is to extend equipment life and reduce customers' operating costs.
Training centre and college
The CAMS Training Center has opened at the plant. It is to host master classes, training sessions and meetings with representatives of the mining industry. According to Karaganda Online, the first training programme will be run by an international expert from Morocco. In addition, the company has signed a memorandum of cooperation with Karaganda Higher Polytechnic College: the document provides for joint training of students, including work placements at the CAMS site.
The regional authorities are placing the emphasis on skills. "It is important for us that, alongside modern production capabilities, the plant will develop training and the preparation of specialists, including together with local colleges," said Alibek Moldakarimov, deputy head of the Karaganda region's department of entrepreneurship and industry. In his words, such projects help create new jobs and localise professional service skills in the region.
Karaganda Online notes that for a region where mining remains one of the key industries, what matters is not only the mining operations themselves but also the companies that keep them running. The new business intends to develop two lines at once: rebuilding mining equipment and training specialists to work with modern machinery.
Who is behind the company
Kursiv has looked into the ownership structure. According to the publication, Central Asia Mining Services belongs, through another entity in the AIFC, to Edmar International Holdings Pte. Ltd., a holding company registered in Singapore. The publication suggests that the holding is part of Edmar Group: CAMS is registered at the group's business centre, and its head is also a director of Edmar Group. The company itself says nothing about its owners in the published materials.
What to check before sending equipment for repair
As Karaganda Online points out, equipment downtime means extra costs for a business, so for the region's quarries and mines another service facility means more choice when it is cheaper to rebuild a machine or major component than to replace it. But before handing equipment over, it is worth checking several things:
- which models and components of a particular brand the facility already accepts and whether it has diagnostic test benches for them;
- warranty terms for rebuilt components and repair lead times: these are not yet available from public sources;
- the cost of rebuilding a component compared with the price of a new one and with the official dealer's offer, taking downtime into account;
- the origin of spare parts: the company says it supplies original parts, and it makes sense to set this down in the contract.
Over time, the training centre and student placements at the site may widen the pool of mechanics and diagnosticians that subsoil users' service departments can hire within the region itself. How quickly CAMS builds up its workload and whether it can compete with dealer service on lead times and price will become clear from its first contracts.
